Maharashtra police’s cyber cell registered an FIR against an X user known as @sujataindia1st for allegedly sharing a manipulated video featuring actor Ranveer Singh endorsing the Congress party. This action came after a complaint was filed by Ranveer’s father, Jugjeet Singh Bhavnani.

The video in question was created using deepfake technology and falsely portrayed Ranveer Singh advocating for Congress. In reality, Ranveer had praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an interview in Varanasi while promoting a fashion show.

The Maharashtra police initiated legal action against @sujataindia1st for circulating a fabricated video depicting actor Ranveer Singh endorsing the Congress party, following a complaint lodged by Ranveer’s father, Jugjeet Singh Bhavnani. The video, a deepfake, misrepresented Ranveer’s statements praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an interview in Varanasi. The FIR filed encompasses charges of cheating, forgery, and defamation under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. Deepfake videos, altered to depict false narratives, are under scrutiny, and the police are actively investigating the matter to uphold justice.

Acting on a complaint by Ranveer Singh’s father, Jugjeet Singh Bhavnani, stating that Ranveer has no political affiliations, the Maharashtra police’s cyber cell registered an FIR against the user @sujataindia1st. The FIR, under sections 417 (cheating), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), and 469 (forgery for the purpose of harming reputation) of the Indian Penal Code, along with relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act, has been lodged. Police are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. Deepfake videos, which convincingly alter reality, are being closely scrutinized.

According to Reuters, two videos circulating on social media show Bollywood actors Aamir Khan and Ranveer Singh criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and endorsing the Congress party in the ongoing 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The videos, one lasting 30 seconds featuring Khan and another 41 seconds featuring Singh, have collectively gained over half a million views. 

In the videos, both actors purportedly express dissatisfaction with Modi’s governance, accusing him of not fulfilling campaign promises and neglecting key economic issues during his tenure as prime minister. The videos conclude with the Congress election symbol and slogan: “Vote for Justice, Vote for Congress.” Both actors have denied involvement in the videos, with Khan filing a case in Mumbai against unknown individuals for impersonation and fraud. However, the videos’ origins remain unclear, prompting investigations by authorities.
