The movie series starring Johnny Depp is getting a reboot. Depp, through his portrayal of the eccentric character, made Captain Jack Sparrow a household name since the franchise’s first film in 2003.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, producer Jerry Bruckheimer said it’s hard to tell about the timing of a new Pirates movie or another Top Gun movie. “You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know,” he said. “But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors,” indicating that Johnny Depp might not reprise the role of Jack Sparrow. Depp was accused of assault by ex-wife Amber Heard. Depp, in turn, sued her for defamation.

The first three movies also had Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom as Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner. Calling it a reboot, not a sequel, might mean Johnny Depp won’t be back as Jack Sparrow, which could speed up production.

Bruckheimer told Comicbook.com that the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie will be more like a fresh start rather than a direct follow-up to Dead Men Tell No Tales. He mentioned his strained relationship with Disney, who tried to distance themselves from him as a precaution. However, Johnny Depp, who is 60 years old, seems more willing to come back if the right opportunity arises.
Depp’s legal battle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard, caused tension with Disney. Even though Depp won the trial, it’s still unsure if he’ll return to the fantasy franchise.
Bruckheimer recently praised Depp’s talent and expressed interest in seeing him as Jack Sparrow again. While it’s not confirmed if Depp will be in the sequel, choosing to reboot the series instead of doing a direct sequel means they can speed up production without waiting for casting decisions. In short, reviving Pirates of the Caribbean for the sixth movie suggests they’re moving away from the old story and characters, possibly signaling the end of Johnny Depp’s time as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Each of the five Pirates movies made over USD 650 million worldwide. ‘Dead Man’s Chest’ in 2006 and ‘On Stranger Tides’ in 2011 even crossed the USD 1 billion mark. The franchise, which started with 2003’s hugely successful The Curse of the Black Pearl, featured Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley in its first three films.
