Actor Ian Gelder, famous for his role as Kevan Lannister in the popular HBO series Game of Thrones, has sadly passed away at the age of 74 after battling cancer. The news of Gelder’s death was confirmed by his husband, Ben Daniels, who shared the heartbreaking announcement on social media.
Ben Daniels is Ian Gelder’s partner and an actor whom he met in 1993 during a production of Entertaining Mr Sloane. Daniels halted his work to care for Gelder and admired his bravery in facing his illness. Daniels revealed that Gelder had been diagnosed with bile duct cancer in December, and his passing came swiftly.

Describing Gelder as his “absolute rock,” Ben Daniels reminisced about their three-decade-long partnership, emphasizing Gelder’s kindness, generosity, and unwavering love. In the emotional post, Daniels wrote, “It is with huge sadness and a heavy heart broken into a million pieces that I’m leaving this post to announce the passing of my darling husband and life partner Ian Gelder.”
Gelder was diagnosed with bile duct cancer in December, and his passing came swiftly, as Daniels shared, “Yesterday he passed at 13.07. I’d stopped all work to be his carer, but neither of us had any idea that it would all be so fast.” Despite his illness, Gelder remained remarkably brave and selfless. Daniels added, “He coped with his dreadful illness with such bravery, with no self-pity. Ever. He was remarkable and will be so missed.”

Ian Gelder, known for his diverse roles on stage and screen, appeared in various television programs and theatrical productions throughout his career. Notably, he portrayed Rumpole’s university lecturer son in the television film Rumpole of the Bailey. Additionally, Gelder graced the stage in productions like The Low Road and Lucy Bailey’s revival of Titus Andronicus at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
On television, Gelder showcased his talent in shows like Torchwood: Children of Earth and Game of Thrones, where he played Mr. Dekker and Kevan Lannister, respectively. He reprised his role as Kevan Lannister in Game of Thrones for Seasons 5 and 6 after a three-year absence. Gelder also made guest appearances in other notable series, including His Dark Materials and Doctor Who. Throughout his career, Gelder left a lasting impact with his versatile performances, earning recognition and admiration from audiences worldwide.
