Director Shawn Levy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) by adding two more beloved superheroes, Deadpool and Wolverine, marking the 34th instalment. The first official Deadpool and Wolverine teaser premiered during the 2024 Super Bowl on Sunday, promising audiences a power-packed addition to the franchise filled with high-octane action sequences and R-rated jokes.

The 155-second teaser opens with Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) celebrating his birthday alongside his fiancée Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) and friends. Wade’s voiceover expresses his contentment despite the challenges of recent years, as the promo video cuts to a shot of him standing with his head down and an intense expression. “I am the luckiest man alive,” he declares during his birthday speech.

Deadpool and Wolverine Teaser Out During Super Bowl 2024

As the Deadpool and Wolverine teaser unfolds, we witness the Time Variance Authority (TVA) arriving to kidnap Wade and integrate him into the MCU. With full confidence, Wade tells them, “Pegging isn’t new for me, friendo, but it is for Disney,” before the TVA agents knock him out and take him to their headquarters. The TVA tells Wade, “You are special. This is your chance to be a hero among heroes,” as we see Wade in Deadpool’s costume for the first time. “Your little cinematic universe is about to change forever. I am the Messiah,” he states, surprising the TVA, before proclaiming, “I am Marvel Jesus!”

The teaser promises, “Everyone deserves a happy ending,” as Deadpool goes on a hilariously violent killing spree, waging war against evil. But he’s not alone. Towards the end of the promo video, as Deadpool has been smashed to the ground, emerges a shadowy figure, the man with retractable claws and superhuman abilities, James “Logan” Howlett, aka Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), signaling an exciting new chapter for the MCU.

Disney Acquisition Sets Stage for Deadpool and Wolverine’s MCU Debut

The inclusion of Deadpool and Wolverine in the MCU follows Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019, which facilitated the return of these characters to Marvel Studios. Marvel had sold the rights of the X-Men films and other related characters to Fox in 1994.

When it was released in 2018, Deadpool 2 broke records, opening with $18.6 million at the North American box office. Two years prior, Deadpool experienced similar success, debuting domestically at $132.4 million, a record for an R-rated film, Variety reported.

Starring Emma Corrin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen, Deadpool and Wolverine is scheduled to be released on July 26, 2024, as part of Phase Five of the MCU.
