The Release of the Netflix Viewer Data for the First Time
Netflix has made its viewer report public for the first time. The report has information on licensed titles also. The online streaming company has decided to publish the report regularly starting now. It will be a biannual report that will publish the viewing data of its shows two times a year.
Netflix was criticized for not being transparent regarding the shows and movies on its platform. This made it take the important step of declaring its viewership data. The first report was published on 12th December.
Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s co-chief executive, during the release of the report, accepted that there was a lack of trust for its platform in Hollywood due to not having data. There was mistrust owing to a lack of transparency.
The streaming giant is providing the data of its shows to make the viewer data more transparent and open. It will help in analyzing the streaming habits of users and judging the performance of different shows and how one show performs compared to others.
The report published for the first time gives us information on the number of hours watched for more than 18,000 shows. It is a data of 100 billion hours of shows that the users have watched Netflix shows.
Longer Shows Get an Advantage in the Viewer Data Report
The data that Netflix has disclosed gives us many insights. The information is valuable and helpful. The streaming service had earlier published the Top 10 lists for its platform. It measured the top 10 shows based on “views”. However, the new viewership data analyses the shows based on the number of hours that users have watched a specific show. This method of considering hours and not views gives more advantage to shows of a longer duration. It does not benefit the shows that have shorter content.
