Apple CEO Tim Cook recently discussed generative AI during an earnings call, saying that the company has an edge in this field and is excited to share new developments soon. Last night, during the opening, Apple unveiled Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024. Apple fulfilled this promise by unveiling Apple Intelligence, which integrates generative AI features into macOS 15 Sequoia, iOS 18, and iPadOS 18. However, not all devices that can run these operating systems will support the new Apple Intelligence features.
Apple Unveiled Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024
Apple announced that Apple Intelligence will work with devices using the Apple M1, M2, M3, and M4 chips and the A17 Pro chipset. This means some current devices won’t get these features later this year.
iPads
- Supported: Current iPad Pro, iPad Air models, and older iPads with M1 and M2 chips.
- Not Supported: Base model iPad 10.9 and iPad mini, which use older Apple Bionic chips.
iPhones
- Supported: iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max with A17 Pro chip.
- Not Supported: iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, which use the A16 Bionic chip.
Macs
- Supported: MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Studio, and Mac mini with an M1 chip or newer.
- Not Supported: Macs with Intel processors.
Apple Intelligence Availability
Apple Intelligence is now available for developers. If you are an Apple developer, you can use some Apple Intelligence features through the latest developer betas of macOS 15 Sequoia, iPadOS 18, and iOS 18. For those in Apple’s public beta program, Apple Intelligence will also be available in the public beta versions of these platforms. However, not all features may be included, and some functionality may be limited.
The official release of Apple Intelligence for everyone is planned for the year’s second half. Apple usually releases iOS updates just before new iPhone models come out. If the iPhone 16 is announced in September, iOS 18 should be available about a week before. iPadOS 18 is expected to come out around the same time. The final version of macOS Sequoia will likely be available around the same time as iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, around September.
