On May 16, Vineet Nayyar, the former executive vice chairman of Tech Mahindra, passed away at 85. The news came through CP Gurnani, the former MD & CEO of Tech Mahindra, on a social media platform. 

Gurnani expressed his sadness, calling Nayyar one of India’s best leaders. He described Nayyar as a friend, mentor, and exceptional person and offered condolences to his family.

With the passing of the IT doyen, industry associations and well-known individuals sent condolences. 

“Vineet Nayyar, the previous Executive Vice Chairman of Tech Mahindra, made tremendous contributions that we will never forget. His devotion and inspiring leadership have made a lasting impression on the sector. We extend our sincere sympathies to his friends, coworkers, and family. Nasscom, the trade association for the IT sector, posted condolences on social networking site X (formerly Twitter).

Chairman of Mahindra Group, Pays Tribute to Vineet Nayyar

Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra Group, remembered when the Mahindra University was just an idea, originally envisioned by Vineet Nayyar of Tech Mahindra. Mahindra expressed pride in presiding over its first convocation, alongside dignitaries like KTRTRS and Dr. Ella of Bharat Biotech, with students as the stars.

Mahindra also expressed sadness over Nayyar’s passing, recognizing his role as an institution builder and praising his ambitious vision. 

Mohit Joshi, CEO & MD of Tech Mahindra, also paid tribute to Nayyar, highlighting his foundational contributions and expressing gratitude for the opportunity to interact with him.

IT Industry Body Nasscom Mourns Vineet Nayyar’s Passing

Nasscom, representing the IT industry, expressed condolences on X, remembering the significant contributions of Vineet Nayyar, former Executive Vice Chairman of Tech Mahindra. They praised his visionary leadership and dedication, acknowledging his lasting impact on the industry.

About Vineet Nayyar

Vineet Nayyar was born in 1939. He finished his master’s degree in development economics from Williams College, Massachusetts. Starting his career in the Indian Administrative Services, he held important roles like district magistrate, Haryana Agriculture Secretary, and Director of the Department of Economic Affairs in the Union government. Later, he worked at the World Bank for over 10 years. In 2009, Nayyar became chairman of Mahindra Satyam.

Throughout his career spanning over 40 years, Nayyar led various organizations across different sectors, forming successful teams and businesses. He gained extensive experience in government, international agencies, and both public and private corporate sectors.

Vineet Nayyar’s Diverse Career Journey

Vineet Nayyar began his career in the Indian Administrative Service. During his time in government, he held various senior positions, such as District Magistrate and Secretary of Agriculture & Rural Development for the Government of Haryana, and Director of the Department of Economic Affairs for the Government of India.

He later joined the World Bank, where he worked for over 10 years in roles including Chief for the Energy, Infrastructure, and Finance Divisions for East Asia and the Pacific. In the corporate sector, Nayyar served as the founding Chairman & Managing Director of the state-owned Gas Authority of India. He also held roles in the private sector, including Managing Director of HCL Corporation, Vice Chairman of HCL Technologies, and founder & CEO of HCL Perot Systems.

Additionally, Nayyar served as a Director on the Boards of various companies, including Indian Oil Corporation, Great Eastern Shipping, Kotak Life Insurance, Business Standard Ltd, The Mahindra United World College of India, The Mahindra Holidays and Resorts India Ltd, and the Tech Mahindra Foundation.
