Tesla, the big electric car company, shocked college students by canceling their summer internships less than a month before they were supposed to start. This sudden move has left many students feeling lost and unsure about their future careers.
Two upset students shared their disappointment on LinkedIn. They had been excited to intern at Tesla but had their offers taken back just three weeks before they were supposed to start. Cancels Summer Internships After Tesla Layoffs 2024
According to reports from Bloomberg, Tesla decided to cancel summer internships after laying off many employees earlier this year. CEO Elon Musk led the company through a big downsizing, letting go of more than 10% of its workers.
Recently, Musk sent an email saying two top executives were leaving and their divisions were closing down, hinting at more changes to come. This news has made some employees worried about their own jobs at Tesla.
Tesla, led by CEO Elon Musk, laid off over 10% of its workers earlier this year. Recent changes included two top executives leaving and their divisions closing down, which made many wonder about the company’s future. Two upset students had their Internship offers taken back, adding to the uncertainty.
Students Respond to Cancellation of Internship Offer
Brook Gura, a 21-year-old student at the University of Texas at Austin, was excited to intern at Tesla. She had turned down other internship offers for this opportunity, which promised $26 an hour and didn’t require her to relocate. However, just three weeks before she was supposed to start, Tesla called to retract her offer.
Brook was planning to work as a recruiting intern in Tesla’s human resources department for 12 weeks starting May 20. She was even expecting to pick up a company laptop in early May. Initially, she wasn’t worried about Tesla’s layoffs, thinking interns were less costly to keep. But then she received a call and email from a Tesla recruiter, and later found out through LinkedIn that her offer was rescinded. It was a disappointing turn of events for Brook and many other aspiring interns.
Joshua Schreiber, a student at Miami University, was excited to intern at Tesla. He received an email about flight arrangements, only to have his offer revoked less than three hours later. Despite feeling let down, Joshua remains determined, saying, “We’re not the product of our circumstance, but a product of our response.” He’s staying positive and open to new opportunities, even though the sudden change has been tough emotionally and financially.
Tesla’s Internship Loss Impact and Reflection
Diana Rosenberg, a technical lead at Tesla, shared her sadness on LinkedIn about losing prospective interns in her team. She encouraged her network to support affected students and find them opportunities elsewhere.
In 2022, Tesla was proud of hiring over 3,000 college students yearly for internships. But recent events have made people doubt Tesla as a top employer for students. This has made everyone involved think and worry about Tesla’s reputation.
