The researchers at the Tata Institute in Mumbai have made a significant breakthrough in cancer treatment. They’ve developed a new medication aimed at preventing cancer. This achievement comes after a decade of dedicated research.
One of the remarkable aspects of this innovation is its affordability. According to Business Standard, the tablet is priced at ₹100 per tablet. This makes it accessible to a wide range of patients. This affordability factor is crucial in ensuring that the medication reaches those who need it the most, especially considering the global impact of cancer.
The newly developed tablet is specifically designed to target cancer recurrence, which is a crucial aspect of cancer treatment. Reports indicate that this breakthrough medication has the potential to transform cancer care by providing a proactive solution to prevent the return of cancer.
Preventing Cancer Spread with Resveratrol-Copper Combination
According to Hindustan Times, Dr. Indraneel Mittra, a leading scientist at Tata Memorial Hospital, said,
“We did a little experiment in which we took human breast cancer cells and implanted them in immunodeficient mice. Within six weeks, a small tumour was formed. We divided the mice into three categories according to the cancer treatment—chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. We found that all the three treatments increased chromatin in the mouse brain.”
He added,
“We found that a combination of resveratrol and copper helped in destroying chromatin. We used the combination to be given orally in our studies and found that it prevented metastasis,”
The tests showed good results in mice, and they now plan to begin trials on humans.
Tata Institute is Focusing on Reducing Cancer Treatment Side Effects
According to Hindustan Times, Dr. Indraneel Mittra and his team are now focusing on reducing treatment-related side effects in various human cancers like stomach, brain, oral, and blood cancers through clinical trials. This shift aims to improve the quality of life for patients undergoing therapy. These efforts can potentially change how cancer is treated and bring benefits to patients worldwide.
Their work emphasizes collaboration and a strong pursuit of knowledge in fighting cancer. As they move from lab tests to human trials, there’s hope for better therapies and a higher quality of life for cancer patients.
In a world where cancer remains a challenge, Dr. Mittra and his team offer hope and inspiration, paving the way for new possibilities in cancer treatment.
