Ashok Vaswani, a seasoned banker with extensive experience at Barclays and Citigroup, earned recognition for pioneering digital banking as a ‘digital evangelist’ at Barclays, contributing significantly to the bank’s recovery after the 2008 financial crisis. Holding roles as a chartered accountant and company secretary, Vaswani played a pivotal part in reshaping Barclays’ retail strategy after the global financial crisis. Notably, he introduced Europe to digital banking through the innovative ‘Pingit’ mobile payments service.

 Ashok Vaswani has recently taken the helm as the Managing Director (MD) and CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank, succeeding Dipak Gupta. This transition follows the interim leadership of Dipak Gupta, who stepped in after the resignation of founder director Uday Kotak on September 2, 2023. At 62, Vaswani is set to lead the bank for a term of three years.

This change marks a strategic shift in leadership, and in October 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) officially approved Ashok Vaswani’s appointment as the MD and CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank for the next three years.

Ashok Vaswani, armed with over three decades of experience at Citi Group and Barclays, brings a wealth of expertise to his new role as MD and CEO of Kotak Bank. The exchange filing highlights his significant executional experience across Corporate and Consumer businesses, coupled with a strong focus on compliance and industrial strength.

During his tenure at Barclays Bank in the UK, Vaswani served as the CEO of their global consumer, private, corporate, and payments business. Notably, he held a key position on the group executive committee. Previously, he served as the CEO of Citigroup Asia Pacific, being a member of both the Citigroup Global Operating Committee and management committees.

Currently, as the President of Pagaya Technologies Ltd, a US-Israeli AI fintech, Vaswani extends his influence globally. He obtained his CA qualification from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and a CS designation from the Institute of Company Secretaries of India. Additionally, he pursued executive education at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

Kotak Mahindra Bank Q2 FY24 Earnings

Kotak Mahindra Bank reported a net profit of Rs 3,191 crore for the July-September FY24 quarter, marking a 23.66 per cent increase from the year-ago period’s Rs 2,581 crore. The net profit exceeded market estimates of Rs 3,092 crore.

The net interest income (NII) witnessed a significant rise, reaching Rs 6,297 crore, a 23.49 per cent increase from the previous fiscal’s Rs 5,099 crore. This NII also slightly surpassed the market estimate of Rs 6,226 crore.

Kotak Bank’s gross non-performing asset (NPA) reduced to 1.72 per cent, down from the 2.08 per cent recorded in the same quarter last year. Conversely, the net NPA for the quarter improved to 0.37 per cent from 0.55 per cent on a year-on-year basis.
