Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to attend the annual G7 summit, which will be held in Puglia, Italy, from June 13 to 15. During the G7 summit, PM Modi will hold bilateral talks with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, continuing their dialogue from her visit to India in March 2023.
On June 14, PM Modi will participate in an Outreach Session to address topics such as Artificial Intelligence, Energy, and regional issues in Africa and the Mediterranean. Additionally, PM Modi’s involvement in the G7 summit will allow him to follow up on the outcomes of the G20 summit that India hosted last year. India will also participate in the Ukraine Peace Summit in Switzerland later. This high-profile event brings together leaders from seven of the world’s major democracies.
G7 Summit in Italy
The G7 summit will be held at Borgo Egnazia, a luxury resort in southern Italy’s Puglia region. This resort has a Michelin-starred restaurant and beautiful views, making it a great spot for the event. A special dinner for the leaders will be held in the nearby city of Brindisi. The media center will be located in Bari, about 80 kilometers from the summit venue.
Who is Attending the G7 Summit?
The G7 summit includes the United States, Japan, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. The European Union is also part of all discussions, and the presidents of the European Council and the European Commission represent it. Italy has invited several additional guests this year, such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pope Francis, US President Joe Biden, the King of Jordan, and leaders from Ukraine, Brazil, Argentina, Turkey, the UAE, Kenya, Algeria, Tunisia, and Mauritania. Heads from the United Nations, World Bank, IMF, African Development Bank, and OECD are also attending.
What’s on the G7 Agenda?
- Climate Change: The G7 countries need to step up efforts as they’re not on track to meet their emission reduction targets for 2030. They aim for a 40-42% cut, but current policies suggest only 19-33% is likely. They’ll discuss ways to expedite the transition from coal to cleaner energy sources by the mid-2030s.
- Africa Development: Italian PM Giorgia Meloni wants to build a clean-energy bridge between the EU and Africa to reduce reliance on Russian gas. Her plan, the Mattei plan, focuses on investing in African infrastructure, development, and energy sectors.
- Israel-Gaza Conflict: The G7 nations are deeply concerned about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. This situation involves frequent exchanges of rockets and airstrikes, causing harm to civilians on both sides. Leaders from countries like the US are calling for an immediate ceasefire to halt the violence and protect people. They are also focused on providing more humanitarian aid to address the urgent needs of those affected by the conflict. Additionally, the G7 is supporting efforts to negotiate a lasting peace agreement that ensures safety and stability for Israelis and Palestinians alike.
- Ukraine Conflict: The G7 nations closely follow the Ukraine conflict, where tensions between Ukraine and Russia have led to military confrontations and international concern. Russia’s actions, including the annexation of Crimea and support for separatist groups in eastern Ukraine, have escalated the situation. This conflict has caused a humanitarian crisis with casualties and many people forced to leave their homes. G7 leaders are discussing ways to provide humanitarian aid to those affected and support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. They are also actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to calm tensions and find a peaceful resolution.
- Migration: To manage migration effectively, the G7 will coordinate policies on migration, offer humanitarian aid, and enhance border security.
- Indo-Pacific and Economic Security: They aim to strengthen economic ties and address security issues in the Indo-Pacific region, countering China’s influence.
- Artificial Intelligence, Energy, and Africa-Mediterranean: Discussions will focus on governing AI technologies, promoting sustainable energy, and supporting development in the Africa-Mediterranean region.
- China’s Industrial Policy: Addressing concerns over China’s economic practices and considering measures to ensure fair competition.
- Global Debt: Strategies to manage debt in developing countries and promote financial stability will be discussed.
- Global Minimum Tax: Finalizing agreements on a global minimum tax to prevent tax evasion and promote economic fairness.
Conclusion of the G7 Summit
The G7 summit ends on June 15, and US President Joe Biden leaves on the evening of June 14. The last day will involve one-on-one meetings between leaders and a final press conference by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
