At a recent company event, Vedanta Group’s Chairman, Anil Agarwal, announced plans to invest $20 billion across all its businesses in India over the next four years. They’re investing more because things like metal prices are going up, which helps the economy. Anil Agarwal also mentioned how India’s economy is growing well, and more investors are interested, especially after the recent elections. He thinks it’s important to help entrepreneurs.
Additionally, he mentioned the group’s commitment to the steel business, indicating they will sell it only if the price is right; otherwise, they will continue operating it.
Vedanta Group’s Investment Plans and Business Focus
Anil Agarwal mentioned that their investments will mainly target technology, electronics, and glass industries, along with their other activities. He stressed the importance of semiconductors and glass for future growth, especially in making screens for smartphones and laptops. They’ve got land in Gujarat for a semiconductor plant but need a strong partner. As for the glass business, they make it in other countries but not in India yet, so they plan to build capacity locally. Agarwal also mentioned that selling the steel business depends on getting the right price; otherwise, they’ll keep running it since it’s profitable.
Anil Agarwal said they originally wanted to sell the steel business by March, but now they’ll only do it if they get the right price. If not, they’ll keep running it because it’s still making money, and they have a great team. He also said Vedanta’s debt is $12 billion, which he thinks they can handle fine.

Supreme Court Dismisses Vedanta’s Plea on Sterlite Copper Smelter
In February, the Supreme Court rejected Vedanta’s request to reopen its Sterlite copper smelter plant in Tamil Nadu for judgment. The court cited repeated violations of laws and regulations as the reason behind its decision. Vedanta intends to file a review petition, but Anil Agarwal emphasised that the conglomerate has shifted focus away from the smelter plant issue.
Regarding the Sterlite copper smelter, Agarwal stated, “Forget about it… it only contributes 0.3% to our business. We’ve moved past that.”
