On Monday night, in the vibrant city of New York, the global television stage was ablaze with brilliance. The International Emmy Awards 2023 unfolded, glorifying exceptional achievement within the industry. The diverse lineup of 56 nominees from 20 countries across six continents highlighted television’s global impact and emphasised its rich diversity.
Netflix stole the show on Monday night, bagging two wins for Best Comedy series, “Vir Das: Landing” and “Derry Girls” season 3.
The comedic masterpiece “Vir Das: Landing,” showcases the wit of one of India’s top comedians, Vir Das. Vir Das secured his second International Emmy nomination for his Netflix special. His stand-up special highlighted his comedic brilliance and garnered him well-deserved acclaim. He made history as the first Indian comedian to win the award.
Significant victories at the International Emmy Awards 2023
Standout victories at the 2023 Emmys include Martin Freeman, awarded Best Actor for his compelling performance in the drama “The Responder.” Jim Sarbh, nominated in the same category for his leading role in the Indian aerospace drama “Rocket Boys,” added to the stellar lineup.
The Best Drama Series honour was bestowed upon “The Empress” from Sommerhaus Serien (Germany), while the captivating “Mariupol: The People’s Story” by Top Hat Productions / Hayloft Productions / BBC (UK) clinched the Best Documentary award.
Karla Souza, acclaimed for her role in the Mexican sports drama “Dive,” triumphed as the Best Actress. She surpassed the competition, including Indian actor Shefali Shah nominated for Season 2 of Netflix’s “Delhi Crime,” which had previously secured the Best Drama award at the 2020 International Emmys.
Ekta Kapoor, the co-founder of Balaji Telefilms, was bestowed with the prestigious 2023 International Emmy Directorate Award.

Reflecting on his victory at the International Emmy Awards, Vir Das expressed,

He emphasised Netflix’s instrumental role in his growth and expressed excitement about the ongoing exploration of diverse narratives, stating, “From Noida to the International Emmys – India gets you there.”
